No problem Seth. It’s a fair question to inquire as to why I’m shooting my mouth off on a particular topic. And by the way, I do not claim to be an expert, as I do not spend all my days slaving over SEO. But the fact that even Sergey and Larry likely originally referred to my site when learning HTML does give me a little street cred.

As far as the SEOMoz link you referred to is concerned, it is merely listing a few of the more than 200 factors that Google takes into consideration. Heading elements within the page do indeed contribute, and they also make a site more navigable. And frankly, readability is just as important to search because it will help bring inbound links, and help lower a page’s bounce rate – both additional factors that impact search rank.

I think the biggest problem with most SEO companies is that many of them use unethical methods that can work effectively for the short-term, but will lead to disasterous results later on. If a SEO company creates millions of link farms, creates fake back linked to you then your website could show up on the 1st page on your relevant keywords in a few months, however Google actively knows this and punishes sites by either lowering their ranking or by blocking their entire website from Google’s search results.

John P. what makes you an expert on SEO? The H1,2,3 etc. tags are not the key points to Google's search code. Please look into a topic before you start passing along knowledge. Please check out the SEOMoz Ranking factors -Seth
